Kumite is not compulsory for beginners, those that choose to take part are often introduced gradually, working on pre-arranged techniques or free sparring at a slow pace. To ensure participant safety, WKF approved safety equipment such as hand mitts, shin guards, mouth guard, chest guards (ladies) and groin guards (men) must be worn. this can all be purchased from your Sensei.
Kumite prepares us for self-defence by developing skills such as timing and distance. It also serves to familiarise us with the reactions needed if someone attacks us (in a safe environment). Kumite is structured for all students and differentiation in opponents is always considered. The ultimate aim of kumite if for one to improve their skill and control so that they can learn to be well equipped for defence, the good ethos that SKA England promotes means that all students are caring, kind and considerate of others making for a nurturing and enjoyable environment.
Kumite is very enjoyable. It can be likened to a game of physical chess, where two training partners aim to outsmart and strategise one another. The training given is World class and students have gone onto win World and European titles, not only as individuals but also as part of a team.
Kumite offers valuable feedback on your karate. Testing your attacking and defensive skills against an opponent gives you regular feedback as to which areas of your technique and strategy need more focus and attention, at SKA England we welcome students to take part in all aspects of the Martial Art but before you 'fight' you must have the fundamentals of Kihon and Kata inbuilt.
